Free Screening for Pregnancy and Postpartum Depression
October 5, 2005, West Islip, NY — This year’s National Mental Health Screening Day (www.mentalhealthscreening.org) on October 6th will include for the first time special attention for screening of pregnant women and mothers for depression related to childbearing. At least up to 10% of pregnant women will experience depression and up to 20% of mothers will experience postpartum depression and/or anxiety within the first year after having a baby. 1 or 2 women in 1,000 births will experience postpartum psychosis.
The Perinatal Mood Disorders Task Force of the Suffolk County Perinatal Coalition (which also serves as the Long Island Chapter of Parents with Psychiatric Disabilities Project of the Mental Health Association of New York State) is collaborating with Family Service League in Bay Shore with including the offering of free screening of pregnant and postpartum women on Thursday, October 6th. Fathers may also receive a free screening for depression.
“Parents need to know there is help available to them if they are not feeling well, having trouble with eating, sleeping and lack of enjoyment of life. They may feel anxious, overwhelmed and irritable. It is important for parents to be screened for depression. Depression is treatable.” shares Mary Sidoti, Program Director of the Children and Parents Together Program of Family Service League and Perinatal Mood Disorders Task Force Co-Chair.
“Perinatal Depression is the most common medical complication related to having a baby. We can’t just tell by looking if a mom or dad is going through depression. If you or someone you know may be going through depression, it is important to seek help and treatment. The free screening is an important first step to take for you and your family,” explains Sonia Murdock, Executive Director, Postpartum Resource Center of New York and Perinatal Mood Disorders Task Force Co-Chair.
